Life can get busy. I mean, who isn’t busy these days?! And often, the first thing to go is date night. But in the midst of the chaos, it’s so important to make time to connect with your spouse.
One of our favorite ways to spend quality time together is to BAKE! Are you surprised? Yes, it’s true! From the beginning of our marriage, Caleb and I have loved to spend time in the kitchen together with a new recipe. We’ve made all kinds of treats from cheesecakes to donuts to pizookies. I’ve always loved baking since I was young and was pleasantly surprised to find that the man I fell in love with could also hold his own in the kitchen!
These past few weeks we’ve been binge watching The Great British Baking show… (has anyone else been sucked in to this show?). It’s SO GOOD! Basically it’s a competition starting with 12 amateur bakers who bake their way through different challenges each week until one person is crowned the winner. The worst/best part about watching this show is that after a few episodes you are seriously craving some delicious baked goods! Cake anyone? Needless to say, we’ve been inspired to do more baking these past few weeks than we’ve done in a while!
Here are some of the things we’ve tried recently:
Homemade Pretzels! We made this recipe and LOVED it. (http://www.sprinklesomesugar.com/homemade-soft-pretzels/ ) They turned out really well! Funny story; we were watching Season 2 when we were inspired to make pretzels. We stopped watching right before the final episode to make these beauties. After making them, we sat down to enjoy them while watching the final episode. GUESS WHAT THEY MADE FOR THEIR TECHNICAL CHALLENGE?? Pretzels! We about died! We think ours turned out better than theirs did on the show too! But we might be a little biased. 😉
These were so much easier than I expected! And so much better than store bought. I definitely recommend giving them a try! Caleb and I had so much fun twisting up the dough into pretzels and coming up with our own flavor combinations. We did one batch of sea salt and one batch of cinnamon sugar. We ended up liking the cinnamon sugar ones best! YUM.
Another favorite that we actually make quite often is Betty Crocker’s Baking Powder Biscuits! They are super versatile. You can make them savory or sweet and play them up or just eat them plain. We tried making them a little fancy last week by adding strawberry jam and coconut whipped cream in the middle! They were delicious!
Quality time is so important and we love to look up a recipe we’ve never made and go for it! But maybe baking isn’t your thing. That’s ok! Find something you both enjoy doing together and make time for it. Your relationship will grow and your marriage will be strengthened for it!
What are some things you like to do with your spouse to reconnect? I want to hear YOUR ideas!
